Cookies and similar technologies

The notice at the foot of the screen says this site uses cookies. The kind it uses is your browser’s storage (session storage and local storage), which keeps a small amount of text on your device for this site alone, rather than cookie files. The law on cookies, regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), treats this storage exactly as it treats cookies, so this policy calls both “cookies and similar technologies”, and the tool asks before keeping anything that is not strictly necessary.

Nothing in this storage is sent to us or to anyone else, and none of it identifies you. The site sets no third-party cookies, and has no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind.

Changing your answer

You can change your answer at any time, here or with “Storage choices” at the foot of every page. Choosing “Decline all” deletes at once anything kept between visits; your choices then last only until you close the tab. Choosing “Accept all” keeps them between visits from then on.

Clearing what is stored

You can delete everything the site keeps by clearing its data in your browser’s settings, usually under privacy, cookies and site data, where most browsers let you clear one site’s data alone; closing the tab clears what is kept for the visit. Clearing it also deletes your answer, so the notice asks again on your next visit.

Earlier versions of the tool kept your choices between visits without asking. If yours did, the tool now moves them into the session, deletes the lasting copy, and asks you.
